How to Talk to a Loved One About Their Addiction

If someone you love develops an addiction, it can be difficult to know how to talk to them about it. You may not know how to approach the topic, but you want to help them. Here are some tips for talking to a loved one through an addiction.

Talk to Them Sober

The first tip is to make sure that your loved one is sober when you choose to talk to them. Although this may take some patience, talking to your loved one when they are inebriated or high will just upset them as they are already not thinking clearly.

Keep Calm

Do not lose your temper when talking to an addict. Your loved one will likely lose their cool, but it is your job to keep the conversation as calm as possible to help instead of attack.

No Judgements

Do not judge your loved one. Come from a place of concern and make it known that you are only talking to them about this because you care about them and want to see them happy and healthy. Consider an intervention for these moments, so that they know that there are multiple people that care about them.

If you are ready to talk to a loved one about addiction, but need help, find resources and consider calling someone for counseling who is used to having these conversations so that they can provide guidance. For further information, call Oak Arbor today.
